Success stories/ achievement i) Himgiri Handloom cum Handicraft Coop. Society: Naharlagun of Arunachal Pradesh. It covers 40 beneficiary families in the tribal belt. Its activities includes weaving, knitting, tailoring, carpet making and cane and bamboo crafts. Apart from running all the business, the society is known for undertaking variety of socio-economic programmes and employment generation activities. The society has received several awards and certificate in recognition of its contribution towards its members.
ii) Lohit Co-operative general Stores Ltd.,Tezu, Distt. Lohit, Arunachal Pradesh: The Lohit Co-operative General Stores Ltd. in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh registered in 1958 is engaged in reaching consumer items in the remote corners of the district. It has a wheat flour and mustard oil unit. 90% of the district’s population depends on the society for meeting their PDS and other essential articles of daily need. The society has a challenging task of maintaining buffer stock of all consumer commodities during the rainy reason when for 5-6 months the district remains cut off from transportation and communication. It has built up a strong network of godowns, retail outlets and fair price shops and a fleet of trucks.
iii) Bholaguri Satra Samabay Samiti Ltd.,: The society is situated in the village Pubthoria in the Nagaon distt. of Assam. The society's total membership stood at 3907. 84% of the subscribed share capital has come from members themselves. Apart from providing short term and medium term loan to the individual member and self-help groups, the society's business operation include provision of banking services, sale of construction hard ware material, wholesale business of essential articles under PDS. The society has set up mustard oil expeller unit. It has promoted self-employment among the weaker sections.
iv) Duar Bagari Samobai Samity Ltd.,P.O.Kuthari, Distt. Nagaon, Assam: The Duar Bagari Samobai Samity in Nagaon district of Assam had a total membership of 3149 at the end of 2002-2003. More than 50% of its members are women/SC/ST/OBCs. The society is mainly engaged in marketing of agriculture produce and disbursement of loans. It has a business turnover Rs.260 lakh with a good track record of recovery. Apart from its normal business activities, it has taken various socio-economic developmental measures for its members.
v) Upper New Nongstoin Women Embroidery Tailoring Knitting-cum-handloom Weaving Industries Cooperative Society Ltd., West Khasi Hills Distt., Meghalaya: This society is an all women society with share capital of Rs.1.77 lakh and a business turnover of Rs.2.66 lakh. It is managed by an elected board. The women members are engaged in handloom weaving, knitting, embroidery and making of readymade clothes/garments. The society imparts free vocational training on weaving, tailoring and knitting particularly to the youth belonging to economically backward classes. It has also trained employees/members to look after the affairs of the society. The society is functioning as a resource centre for imparting training to personnel from industry, block, social welfare and handloom departments. Indeed, it is a matter of pride for a small cooperative venture at the primary level.
vi) Baktawng Consumer Cooperative Society Ltd.,P.O. Baktawng, Mizoram: Registered in 1991, the society is engaged in the business of consumer goods. Two-third of the share capital has come from members. The society has its own building. It has shown consistently progressive results and has a modest business turnover of Rs.13 lakh. Managed by an elected board, the society’s daily affairs are looked after by a trained employee. All the individual members have received member-education. The society shares the NCDC Biennial Excellence Award-2004 with Darlung Service Cooperative, Aizawl Disttr. Mizroam.
vii) Darlung Service Cooperative society Ltd., B.P.O.Darlung, Aizawl Distt., Mizoram: The Darlung Service Cooperative is located at a remote land-locked area in Mizoram. Registered in 1977, it undertakes business of consumer items, hardware, medicines and all other essential articles. The people of Darlung and surrounding villages depend on it for all their essential articles during fair and adverse seasons. The society has a total turnover of Rs.18 lakh. It has undertaken several welfare programmes like repair of road, rest house, school building and community hall besides housing, drinking water and education of children of its needy members. Indeed the society has won the gratitude of the people of the area. It has secured the Best Service Cooperative Society Award and also the Member Education and Training Award from the Mizoram State Cooperative Union. The society shares the NCDC Biennial Excellence award 2004 with Baktawng Consumer Cooperative, Mizroam.
viii) East Circular Road Women MPCS Ltd.,Kohima, Nagaland: The East Circular Road Women Multi-purpose Cooperative Society in Kohima is an all-women cooperative doing business in handloom products and credit. The society is managed by an elected board. Its entire equity capital comes from its members. It has a modest turnover of Rs.6 lakhs and is a net profit earner. It has organized training and education for its members all of whom take active interest in the affairs of the society. It has a record of 100% recovery.
ix) Ranir Bazar PACS Ltd., Debinagar,Ranir Bazar, West Tripura, Tripura: This is a Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society having 1336 members with representation of women and SC/ST communities. The society is mainly engaged in agricultural credit, banking, sale of fertilizer and consumer articles. It also provides agricultural equipments on rental basis to its members. It has a modest business turnover of Rs.6 lakh and has been earning profits. The society has an elected board and is run by trained staff. It has donated funds for adult education and has extended financial help for women and weaker sections. It has successfully promoted SHGs. The society has received award for best recovery performance.
x) The Ima Langlumi Cattle Farming Cooperative Society Ltd., Thanomeiband Sinam Leikai, Imphal West, Manipur: The society was established in the year 1991 with dairying as its main business. The society overcame its teething problems through concerted efforts at member involvement and raising of share capital. Awareness programme on animal health care, vaccination and feed and hygiene management undertaken by the society contributed to enhance the quality and quantity of milk production. The society has been able to increase its membership and turnover to Rs.26 lakh. Through community development programmes particularly for women, promotion of self help groups for income generating activities like food preservation and papad making, and nominal financial support to local clubs and other associations for organizing social activities, the society has carved out a name for itself among the local population. It has been the recipient of the Best Cooperative society award from the Manipur State Cooperative Union.
